IESO

The idea of  4th IESO Logo is originated from Gunungan character in Wayang performance. The wayang is a flat or round puppets used for shows in Java. The wayang kulit is the flat one and it is made with buffalo leather (kulit = leather). They are manipulated behind a white screen with a back light, so the attendance can see them as shadow puppets. Wayang is considered as the highlight of Javanese culture.  The story performed is mainly taken from the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics, old Indonesian tales with Hindus culture background. Wayang performance, with Gunungan character on the middle. To signal the beginning and the end of the performance the Dalang (wayang player) uses the Gunungan, the most important requisite in the Wayang theatre. The Gunungan (Gunung = mountain) represents a mountain as well as a representation of the ancient Tree motif originating from India.  Gunungan basically symbolizes the interaction of the elements of fire, earth, air and water as well as the relation of God and human.   Gunungan character and 4th IESO Logo. This philosophy is taken as the background of the 4th IESO Logo.  The mutual relationship between the earth and human is the main idea of the understanding of Sustainable Development as depicted in this year theme “The Present is The Key to The Future”.
